"A program that educators can use as a foundation to integrate physical activity and nutritional education into every part of their school day because academics and fitness go hand in hand! … It’s not just about the program; it’s about the people behind the program. The authors are people who care about our kids. They know teaching is about commitment, passion and a willingness to create change"
"New research shows the connection between movement, brain development and test scores. It's based of this book (Core Purpose Consulting's Recess Was My Favorite Subject Where did it Go"?). The authors of this book (CPC) were awarded a Grant from the NCAA and take the MOYS to Utah"
"Core Purpose Consulting was able to provide schools ideas from the point of view of what schools are going through not from the state's perspective. Core Purpose was everything that I was hoping the training to be. They are a professional, friendly, and relatable team"
"Dr. Hesse, I want to say thank you for writing such an outstanding Active Schools success story about Sandra Day O’Connor High School’s Student Wellness Advocacy Team (S.W.A.T.). What you all – staff and students – are doing to create an active and healthy school environment is an inspiration. As the S.W.A.T. creator, you should be very proud of what is happening at your school; your leadership is commendable".
“Having site-based SHACs is a significant step towards ensuring that all of our schools meet the expectations and guidelines set forth by various state and federal agencies,” said Schadler. “Our goal is to have all five of our schools start with CPC Bronze level recognition. From there, we’ll just keep getting better.”
"It's about the culture you created in the classroom...you have the best attendance, the least amount of behavior issues and the most productivity thats happening in the classroom each and every day. I appreciate everything you have done for our school...The motivation that has come to our campus is phenomenal. We are going to work to do Minutes Out of Your Seat in every classroom. We are going to transform our whole school based on the 64 day-challenge CPC brought to us".
"With Minutes Out of Your Seat we are able to bring in movement right into the lessons and getting the students moving gets their brains engaged. Research shows that a relation between movement, brain development and test scores. What happens after this? We keep doing it!"
"In a time when a culture of community, connection, and self-awareness is paramount to the social-emotional well-being of our students and staff, the Healthy Schools Guide is a timely, well written set of resources that supplemented what we already had in place. Fun, challenging, and insightful for a broad range of grade levels and SEL awareness, the structure allowed us to personalize it based on our specific school site needs."
"I had the privilege to both observe and interact with students today at SDOHS, under the supervision of Dr. WiSH (William S. Hesse, Ph.D.). I felt compelled to share the insight I gleaned on how Dr. WiSH and his team are making some very profound impacts on campus in regards to approaching student wellness.
Dr. WiSH has diligently been working to promote the Student Wellness Advocacy Team (SWAT). SWAT takes the approach of promoting physical, educational, and mental wellness across the campus community. I spoke with two separate teams and viewed their presentations. My favorite, was focused on healthy lifestyles for student athletes, and encompassed areas such as diet, exercise, stress management etc. It was incredible really. I asked the two girls who were leading this about their research efforts and came to find out, it was quite extensive. Months of reading, paired with statistical analysis was put into this site, and they are now working towards published on the actual school site for all students to take advantage of.
These kids clearly feel empowered to help one another, and it was evident based on the passion in which they shared with me.
I was also able to stay and be witness to Healthy Hour. For those that may not know what this is, it is an entire hour where the campus transforms. Not only are the students able to focus on improving academics, but they also have the opportunity to participate in physical activity. It was simply incredible to witness the engagement among the kids and the learning that takes place.
I share all of this to say this, until as a district we begin to look at student wellness as a whole, we are doing a disservice to our campus is beyond evident and the most encouraging piece is that the kids are part of that. I wish so badly that our district officials would get up from behind their desks, and just stand where I stood today and simply look. Look at the amazing students we have and the dedicated educators like Dr. WiSH and realize change is more in reach than they often think.
Thank you Dr. Hesse for today and for All of your hard work!"
